Why DNA sex your geese?

In most breeds ganders and geese look very alike, even as adults. Vent sexing a goose takes experience and handling the bird. A small blood spot or a few feathers settles the question.

Samples we accept

  • Blood spot Best choiceA tiny drop from one toe nail on a coffee filter, paper triangle, plain paper, or Q-tip.
  • Feathers3-6 mature feathers, freshly plucked. Baby fluff will not work.
  • Eggshell membraneThe dry membrane from inside the shell.

Every sample must be completely dry before it goes in the bag. See the sample instructions or the toe nail blood guide.

Questions

How young can my goose be tested?
A blood sample can be collected as early as day 1 after hatch. Feathers only work once they are mature, so baby fluff will not work.
Which sample should I send?
A tiny blood spot on a coffee filter or small paper triangle is the easiest and preferred option. 3-6 freshly plucked mature feathers or dry eggshell membrane are also accepted.
How long do results take?
Most results are ready the next day after your samples arrive; please allow up to 72 hours when the lab is busy. You get an email as soon as they are complete.
