How it works

  1. Order onlinePick how many birds and check out.
  2. Collect at home and mailA drop of blood, a few feathers, or eggshell membrane, labeled and posted to our Fort Pierce lab.
  3. Results by emailWe email you as soon as your results are ready.

Why DNA sex your ducks?

Ducklings look alike, and in many breeds the adults stay very similar too. Clues like a curled tail feather on drakes or a louder quack from hens take months to show, and not every breed has them. DNA sexing tells you early, long before those clues appear.

Samples we accept

  • Blood spot Best choiceA tiny drop from one toe nail on a coffee filter, paper triangle, plain paper, or Q-tip.
  • Feathers3-6 mature feathers, freshly plucked. Baby fluff will not work.
  • Eggshell membraneThe dry membrane from inside the shell.

Every sample must be completely dry before it goes in the bag. See the sample instructions or the toe nail blood guide.

Questions

How young can my duck be tested?
A blood sample can be collected as early as day 1 after hatch. Feathers only work once they are mature, so baby fluff will not work.
Which sample should I send?
A tiny blood spot on a coffee filter or small paper triangle is the easiest and preferred option. 3-6 freshly plucked mature feathers or dry eggshell membrane are also accepted.
How long do results take?
Most results are ready the next day after your samples arrive; please allow up to 72 hours when the lab is busy. You get an email as soon as they are complete.
