About This Test
This emu DNA sexing test gives a clear genetic result. It is built for breeders and keepers who need dependable sex identification for pairing decisions, flock planning, and record keeping.
We identify whether your bird is male (ZZ) or female (ZW) from a small sample. The result is straightforward, highly accurate, and useful long before visual differences appear.
Why DNA Emu Sexing Matters
Because emus are not sexually dimorphic at hatch, visual sexing is unreliable until maturity. DNA testing provides an accurate and early method to determine sex using a small, non-invasive sample.
The test amplifies sex-specific genetic regions and compares band presence to determine chromosomal sex. The method is highly accurate, does not change with age, and remains valid for the life of the bird.
Sample Type
A tiny amount of blood on a triangle piece of coffee filter, printer paper or paper towel.
The sample dries quickly, travels well, and keeps the DNA stable for testing in our homestead lab.
Blood on coffee filter, paper, or Q-tip is accepted. Eggshell membrane and mature feather are also accepted when that is the sample you collected.
Full step by step instructions are available on the How it works page.
