About This Test

This ratite DNA sexing test gives a clear genetic result for emu, rhea, and ostrich. It is built for breeders and keepers who need dependable sex identification for pairing decisions, flock planning, and record keeping.

We identify whether your bird is male (ZZ) or female (ZW) from a small sample. The result is straightforward, highly accurate, and useful long before visual differences appear.

Why DNA Ratite Sexing Matters

Because most ratites are not sexually dimorphic at hatch, visual sexing is unreliable until maturity. DNA testing provides an accurate and early method to determine sex using a small, non-invasive sample.

The test amplifies sex-specific genetic regions and compares band presence to determine chromosomal sex. The method is highly accurate, does not change with age, and remains valid for the life of the bird.

Sample Type

A tiny amount of blood on a triangle piece of coffee filter, printer paper or paper towel.

The sample dries quickly, travels well, and keeps the DNA stable for testing in our homestead lab.

Mature feather quills are also accepted when the bird is 4+ months old. Younger birds should be submitted with blood for best reliability.
