Ermine Ameraucanas
A black based Ameraucana project built on the interaction of Dominant White and black pigment, producing bold contrast and true blue eggs.
How the Genetics Work
The ermine appearance is created when a black bird carries one copy of Dominant White.
Black provides full pigment expression. Dominant White suppresses pigment. When combined, pigment is partially restricted instead of fully removed. This allows black to break through on a largely white bird.
Simplified Shorthand
- BB = Black
- WW = Dominant White
- BW = Ermine
My Flock Structure
My breeding group is built around Dominant White males over mostly black females, with a few ermine females included.
This setup consistently produces a strong percentage of ermine offspring. Occasionally a few smoky or lightly smutty feathers may appear. Under the proposed SOP, these minor areas are not considered a disqualification.
Breeding Outcomes
- Ermine × Ermine → 25% Black, 50% Ermine, 25% Dominant White
- Black × Ermine → 50% Black, 50% Ermine
- Ermine × Dominant White → 50% Ermine, 50% Dominant White
- Black × Dominant White → Nearly 100% Ermine
- Dominant White × Dominant White → Nearly 100% Dominant White
If results do not match expectations, hidden recessive white or modifier genes may be influencing pigment expression.
Blue Egg Genetics
Ameraucanas carry the blue egg gene which deposits pigment throughout the shell rather than coating the outside.
That is why the inside of a true blue egg is also blue.
